You can leave your child’s paintings there to dry while you explore the rest of the museum! Just don’t forget to pick them up before you head out, or you WILL be making a return trip at the insistence of your children (speaking from experience). For just MADE for Kids, there’s an annual membership ($75, two adults, four children). Finally, there are usually a couple of flash sales each year for the higher membership levels, so following The Magic House on social media is a good idea. An annual membership provides admission to the Museum, exclusive events, discounts and other perks!

As one of the more popular attractions in St. Louis, The Magic House can be busy no matter when you go.

Additional Information

Kids can learn to launch everything from rockets to small businesses in The Magic House @ MADE, which opened to the public today. The Magic House’s first permanent satellite location, at 5127 Delmar, isn’t a museum. Rather, it’s an interactive space where kids can get hands-on experience working with low-tech looms, high-tech laser cutters, and much more. Everyone from grandparents on down can have fun at The Magic House, but the exhibits are mostly designed for younger children. The “For Baby & Me” area features a peek-a-boo barn, baby gym, and miniature school bus.

Board, Committees and Staff

Founded in 1979, this interactive children’s museum provides fun hands-on learning activities that encourage creativity. The museum staff loves to help children understand science, history, and the world around them through exhibits that involve them in the action. Family Plus ($250) is a great option for parents and kids from a single household who want to get into both museums. Among other tools, the art area features potter’s wheels, a screen printer, and a colorful display of markers and other supplies that’s a work of art on its own. The makers’ space, sponsored by the Ameren Corporation Charitable Trust, showcases sewing machines, a laser cutter, and an area where visitors can apply basic coding skills by using special markers to design a path for a tiny Ozobot robot. The Ozobot can change speed, direction, or even spin or zigzag according to the color codes in its path.

For kids ages 0-24 months, there is a special baby and toddler play area near the Children’s Village that is totally safe for them to crawl and explore! Be aware that age restrictions are not strictly enforced, so older siblings may join as well (pros and cons there!). Group VisitsThe Magic House offers a special group rate of $7 per person for groups of 15 or more people.

The design lab offers tools to create stop-motion videos and features a video game design station created by St. Louis–based game developer Pixel Press. Kids can also draw up 3-D prototypes of gears and gadgets using Tinkercad, a computer-based design tool, and print out their creations on a 3-D printer. You don’t have to be a kid to appreciate all the wonder and knowledge that is packed inside the walls of St. Louis’ Magic House. Regular admission for The Magic House @ MADE  is $5 for visitors 1 and older. Family Memberships, offering unlimited admission to The Magic House @ MADE, are available beginning at $50 a year. Active-duty U.S. military and their immediate family members (military ID holder and five immediate family members) receive free admission.

Foster families receive free admission with proof of a current foster home license. The design lab includes an architecture area stocked with supplies from 3DuxDesign, a company founded by siblings Ayana and Ethan Klein, two of the featured speakers at a preview party celebrating the space Thursday. 3Dux building sets consist of cardboard shapes and simple connectors that allow kids the flexibility to build and embellish an endless variety of structures. It takes more than one day to fully explore and enjoy the scholastic treasures found on every floor of the Magic House. Exhibitions such as the Bubble Room and the Lewis and Clark Adventure are designed to educate and entertain people of all ages. The pin point wall allows curious onlookers to create 3D impressions of themselves, and the Jack and the Beanstalk area gives kids the opportunity to climb a three-story beanstalk just like the hero from the classic children’s tale.

The Magic House engages all children in hands-on learning experiences that spark imagination, pique curiosity, enhance creativity and develop problem-solving skills within a place of beauty, wonder, joy and magic. The Magic House has frequent special events, generally giving participants access to play in the museum afterward. One of the most popular, Big Truck Day, will blow the minds of your young vehicle lovers. Generally held in the fall, it’s a ticketed event that brings cranes, fire trucks, bucket lifts, sleeper cab trucks, and more up close for examination and exploration.

A little pricey when you pay the same price for everyone, one year and older. The Magic House, St. Louis Children’s Museum embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential to our mission. We value and seek to support the uniqueness of each member of our community including their race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and identity, ability, age, socioeconomic level and religious/spiritual identities. Scholarships are available for St. Louis area organizations that serve children’s in need of financial assistance. MADE for kids is located in St. Louis’ Delmar Maker’s District on Delmar Boulevard between the Central West End and the Delmar Loop.

In 1997, the Museum underwent a major expansion which added the Children's Village, Math Path, Fitness Center and an Education Wing. In 2001, The Magic House opened Backyard Magic, an outdoor facility featuring a Victorian Education Pavilion, a Children's Sculpture Garden and an outdoor Exhibit Patio. Again in 2008, The Magic House underwent a major expansion as it added a 25,000-square-foot addition nearly doubling the size of the Museum.[5] In 2005, "A Little Bit of Magic" was transformed into the hands on STEM exhibit, WonderWorks. In 2019, to further extend the reach of The Magic House in the community, we opened MADE for Kids, a new satellite location created for children ages 4-14 on the north side of Delmar Boulevard in the City of St. Louis. Since it opened, MADE for Kids has served over 60,000 visitors and developed important community partnerships in the region and implemented a workforce development initiative for neighborhood youth.

Admission also includes a hot dog lunch and private playtime in Trike Town. Cultural events, too, like an observance of the Hindu festival of colors, Holi, and a German Easter celebration, draw crowds. Finally, holiday breakfasts and evenings with characters like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny are annual traditions. Everything you need to know about the kids' museum's exhibits, special events, and memberships, plus info about its satellite location, MADE for Kids. This included a large wrap-around porch, an expanded lobby and an elevator that allowed the Museum to be accessible to all visitors.

The Fit Kid events are from 4 to 7pm on the first Friday of every month. Kids under 12 are invited to complete a fitness challenge when they arrive to earn their free admission. The children’s museum opened in 1979, and somewhere around here I’ve got a button to prove it.

The Magic House offers hands-on learning experiences for children that spark imagination, enhance creativity and develop problem-solving skills. If you’re of a certain age and you grew up in St. Louis, chances are the Magic House grew along with you. It opened on Oct. 16, 1979, in a 5,500 square foot Victorian mansion, and after several expansions, it’s now 55,000 square feet.

We have several levels to choose from to fit your families needs, view our annual pass options here. The Magic House is one of the top Children’s Museum’s in the country, inspiring children to discover the world through play as they explore hundreds of exciting interactive exhibits. Residents of St. Louis County, City of St. Louis, Jefferson County, Franklin County, St. Charles County, Warren County and Lincoln County can enjoy $3 admission per person from 3 p.m. To receive the discount, guests need to provide proof of residency. The interactive space is the Kirkwood children museum’s first satellite location. The Magic House, as well as MADE for Kids, also has Free Family Nights the 3rd Friday of every month from 5-8 pm!

The recycling/upcycling craft area offers fun tools from scissors and needle/thread to hot glue guns. This exhibit transports kids back to the time of dinosaurs and encourages basic scientific learning. Oldham is a freelance writer and Teach For America alumna who has taught middle school, high school, college, and adult education classes in the St. Louis area. In the entrepreneurs’ marketplace, they can design buttons and business cards to market their ideas and inventions. And the Magic House @ MADE even features some real-world examples of products created by kids who’ve done just that. The MADE acronym defines the facility’s four sections, a Makers’ Space, Artists’ Studio, Designers’ Lab, and Entrepreneurs’ Marketplace, with each area offering several activities and design challenges to spark kids’ creativity.

I know of a couple ways to get in the Magic House for free, and couple more places where you can find coupons. The good news/bad news is that temporary safety regulations have limited their visitor capacity to 150 people per session. This means tickets could go super fast, but also that there will be no crowds. They’ve made a lot of improvements to the house while waiting to reopen, including touchless faucets and toe kicks for bathroom doors. Exhibits have been spaced out, while some that are too difficult to make germ safe have been closed. The Family Plus Membership will also get you 50% off admission at 200+ museums in other states!

A Beginner's Guide to Earthbag Homes Construction

earthbag house

Khalili developed a system that used 85% earth and 15% cement plaster and which is then covered by “reptile”, a veneer of grapefruit sized balls of cement and earth. Reptile is easy to install and because the balls create easy paths for stress, it doesn't crack with time. Some Superadobe buildings have even been covered by living grass, a kind of green roof but covering the entire structure. Any exterior treatment and building details would need to be adapted to a region’s specific climatic needs.

Earthbag construction

Either go where there are no building inspectors or learn to work with the one you got. I should also mention that some insurance companies might not be willing to insure your new earthbag home, so check with them first if that is important to you. Kyle and Jolene built their SuperAdobe dome home off-the-grid with no electricity and few tools. The bulk of the material was earth dug up from the subsoil on site. "The result is a stable building with a ton of thermal mass, so it holds warmth through the night and is stay a consistently comfortable temperature," they say.

How much does earthbag house cost?

For homeowners wanting to make an earthbag home in a jurisdiction that doesn't currently allow for this type of construction, getting an engineer's "stamp of approval" can help. Also, educating officials in charge of your building code might be a strategy worth exploring. Earthbag homes offer several other advantages and sustainability benefits. Unlike concrete, brick, wood, or other typical home construction materials, earthbag construction requires very little external energy.

Step 8: Make custom-sized bags

Also, you may have to consider where you’d live while it is being built. So if you would like to have an earthbag home with three bedrooms, then you might want to check this one out. So if you’d like to consider a different look for your earthbag home, then you might want to consider this option. Which is why I wanted to share this with you so you could see what the inside of earthbag home (in a cob home style) could actually look like. This is another example of how an earthbag home doesn’t have to be a little mushroom shaped home. I think a lot of people automatically assume that an alternative housing option has to be small and look unique.

Today because of technology development, new techniques have replaced these native solutions. In this study we try to show theoretical topics about issues of stability, climate, green architecture, energy saves and naturalization of architecture in a modern framework... All floor plans, renderings and other media shown on this website are property of their respective designers, architects or artists. Earthbagbuilding.com is not liable for blueprint interpretation, or the structural integrity of buildings built from stock house plans purchased here. We provide plans for construction purposes but do not oversee the construction and cannot verify that the structure is built to necessary standards. Solid CE may be built with less barbed wire in low-risk areas because walls solidify between courses.

Step 2: Door Thresholds and Door Bucks

But in areas with termites, it’s best to use anchors made of galvanized sheet metal. They’re inexpensive, strong, easy to make from scrap metal, resistant to decay and, because they’re thin, they don’t take up space between bags like wood anchors do. In most cases, sheet metal anchors are preferred over wood anchors. Simply nail into the earthbags with galvanized nails and screw into the backside of the bucks. Layering, leveling, and tamping earthbags requires specialized skills to ensure the structure is built correctly.

How to Add Modern Amenities to an Adobe House – Mod Cons

You don’t have to transport them from afar and incur transportation costs. Once you have a whole row complete, you now need to tamp that row to make it hard and compact. To do the tamping, you need something heavy with a flat bottom. You can use a log that is about 5 feet long, a metal store-bought tamper, or a concrete one that you make yourself. Whatever you choose, make sure it is heavy enough to tamp well, but light enough that you can use it without tiring too quickly. Of course, the exact weight will vary according to individual strength, but an average store-bought tamper weighs about 15 pounds, so if you make your own, use 15 pounds as the standard.

Step 12: Cement Plaster on Exterior Walls

earthbag house

Our goal at Walden Labs is to be the ultimate resource for building self-reliance and resilience, and learning about the survival skills of our ancestors. Adding thermal insulation will help further mitigate the effects of a hot or cold climate, keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. Earthbag homes are highly durable if constructed correctly.

If you forget or want to add extra boxes, sharpen the end of the pole and drive it into the wall with a small sledgehammer before the soil gets too hard. You want the front of the box to protrude about 1-1/4” beyond the earthbags to match the plaster. After the walls are built, screw boxes to the stakes with two screws and staple or nail the wiring in the recesses between bags.

It's also possible to import soil from a local gravel yard, where reject materials from gravel usually have an appropriate sand-to-clay ratio. A simple round dome takes an average of 30 days for two people working 8 hours a day. This figure includes the foundation, building the walls, framing, and roofing.

A fourth option utilizes the reinforced earthbag system developed by Precision Structural Engineering, Inc. (PSE). Simply add foam board insulation or spray foam insulation on the exterior of earthbag walls. This is probably the most practical approach if you need a building permit. PSE is licensed in 27 states, and they also have reciprocal relationships with engineers around the world that would enable you to get engineer approved plans and building permits almost anywhere. This building system has been covered in detail on our Earthbag Building Blog. Here’s the link to their Reinforced Earthbag Specifications .

Earthbag walls also exhibit high levels of thermal mass, which is the measure of a material's ability to absorb, store and transfer heat. Earthbag walls that are greater than 12 inches thick (0.3 m) exhibit the thermal flywheel effect. At the hottest time of the day, the walls will absorb the heat, but they don't release it into the structure until the walls start cooling at night. This creates about a 12-hour-delay between the time in which the walls soak in the heat and when they release it. For this reason, earthbag homes work best in locales where there is a significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The buildings in the Iranian desert regions are constructed according to the specific climatic conditions and differ from those in other climates.

Bags on the course above are offset by 200 mm (8 in)—half of the 450 mm (18 in) wall width—similar to running bond in masonry. Bags can either be pre-filled with material and hoisted up, or bags or tubes are filled in place. The weight of the earthen fill locks the bag in place on the barbed wire below. A light tamping of the bags or tubes consolidates the moist clay-containing fill and creates interlocking bags or tubes anchored on the barbed wire.

This design is the result of years of research in energy efficiency and low cost, alternative building methods. Base walls of CG in high risk regions may need additional buttresses at the foundation level where builders cannot afford a reinforced concrete (RC) grade beam or footing. A narrower plastic mesh tube often used for erosion control wattle could be filled with gravel to allow a half-width RC ring beam under the wide walls.

However, there are certain things you must bear in mind when considering how to add modern amenities to an adobe house. The interior of the Earth-Bermed Natural House plan occupies 287 square feet, while the sleeping loft provides a further 287 square feet of living space. An excellent fact about building a roundhouse is that they are highly resistant to storms. The Earthbag Arc House plan has a 672 square feet interior, one bath, and one bedroom. The curved walls capture and store solar energy to stabilize the house’s temperature when it gets cold. These are supports for the bench that went along the window.

Step-by-Step Earthbag Building : 9 Steps with Pictures

Meanwhile, the barbed wire gives the entire structure tensile strength. The earthen nature of the walls provides insulation and natural fire resistance. Earthbag homes have passed several rigorous earthquake code tests in California.

When to Pinch Pennies and When to Pay for Quality as a Homesteader

They found the idea of making a home almost entirely from materials found on the site of their rural homestead attractive. In terms of structural strength, earthen architecture is often constructed using techniques that ensure the home lasts for hundreds of years. In the Hadramut region of Yemen, whole cities of earthen skyscrapers (up to nine stories tall) continue to house a growing population. When complete, the structure should be plastered as soon as possible to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Step 1: Tools and materials

For earthbag construction, the bag provides the form for the dirt and clay, eliminating the need to create bricks and wait for them to dry. In this way, earthbags require less moisture and less time. The bags are typically 50-pound (23-kg) or 100-pound (45-kg) sacks of polypropylene or burlap.

Earthbag Homes: The Background

For the floor, we troweled natural iron oxide pigment on the surface before the concrete set up. It’s easiest to build a bond beam immediately above windows and doors so you don’t have to build lintels. Reinforced concrete or wood bond beams are both acceptable.

Introduction: How to Build an Insulated Earthbag House

He began stacking sandbags like bricks, using barbed wire as a kind of mortar. Eventually, Khalili developed superadobe, which is a building method that uses mile-long fabric tubes that can be pumped full of soil and laid in coils to create a structure. He presented this idea to NASA and built a prototype lunar colony in Hesperia. Housing demand for the low/moderate-income majority in global south creates potential and need for several housing types. Currently, one-sixth of the world's population lives in urban slums in emerging and developing countries. In addition net growth of 2.6 billion in world population between now and 2050 is projected to occur in these cities.

This article explains all the specs of rammed earth that you might not be aware of, so you can build with confidence. The Fourplex house plan is partitioned into four units, each with an interior of 462 square feet, one bedroom, and one bathroom. With the many house plans out there, it can be challenging to identify the right one that meets your needs.

Step 5: Frame out Windows and Doors

Although the construction of an earthbag building is simple, it takes a lot of experience to perfect the system. Therefore, it is important to gather advice from experienced earthbag builders and research the topic. The structure can be rectangle, square, round, ellipse, or even triangular. Always use the best building practices when shaping your earthbag house.

Bag-fill materials

Many like Akio Inoue, from Tenri University in Japan and Scott Howard of Earthen Hand have tested and built buildings. Hart, with Geiger,[7] encouraged earthbag's development into different culturally and climatically-appropriate shapes. Robert Shear built an earthship inspired earthbag house in Utah and Morgan Caraway of Sustainable Life School is building a house that incorporates earthship design principles as well. Any type of roof is possible, and space doesn’t allow a lengthy discussion. We used a metal compression ring with radiating wood poles covered in thatch.

What is SuperAdobe?

Once you have laid your first course of bags on the gravel foundation, you need to run at least one strand of barbed wire atop the bags. One of the top recommendations for a foundation is to dig a trench 6-12 inches deep and fill it with gravel. You must tamp the bags down to get any wiggle room eliminated. Filling earthbags is a two-person job, one to fill the bags and one to hold them open.

earthbag house

You are also helping the environment by using dirt as your primary building material. The R-value of an earthbag house depends on the composition of the earthbag fill. It can range from R-26 to R-30, similar to a straw bale wall. An earthbag dwelling can last for centuries in dry climates, and many adobe homes still stand from hundreds of years ago in the desert. The oldest adobe house still standing in America is in New Mexico and dates back to the 1600s. Many homes build their kitchens out of earthbags, from countertops to pizza ovens.

Earthbag is frequently chosen for many small-to-medium-sized institutional structures in the developing world. As with most alternative building techniques, navigating the building codes and laws for earthbag homes can be tricky. Because of the relative "newness" of this building technique, many local building codes will not recognize this earthen building technique. To date, code-approved Super Adobe houses have been built in Hawaii, California, Utah, Arizona, and Kentucky.

Then I got the idea that I would research different house building options when I got home, and that is exactly what I did. Jennifer is a full-time homesteader who started her journey in the foothills of North Carolina in 2010. Currently, she spends her days gardening, caring for her orchard and vineyard, raising chickens, ducks, goats, and bees.

Buildings with straight walls longer than 5 m (16.4 ft) in length need intersecting walls or bracing buttresses. If you want a really nice home, be sure to plan accordingly and give this some extra thought. Finishing work does require extra time and effort, but the results are definitely worthwhile.Interior view showing natural color of earthen plaster, recycled windows and yellow concrete floor.

Construction usually begins by digging a trench to undisturbed mineral subsoil, which is partially filled with stones and/or gravel to create a rubble trench foundation. In high seismic risk regions a reinforced concrete footing or grade beam may be recommended. To improve friction between bags and wall tensile strength barbed wire is usually placed between courses. Twine is also sometimes wrapped around the bags to tie one course to the next, to hold in-progress structures together and keep courses well-seated on barbed wire prongs. Rebar can be hammered into walls to strengthen corners and opening edges and provide resistance against overturning. Earthbag construction is an inexpensive building method using mostly local soil to create structures which are both strong and can be quickly built.

I bought a nice outfit (way more than Id normally spend) for my sons baptism. I washed it on delicate cycle per the garment instructions and tried it on him and a button had already fallen off and the seams of the outfit were coming apart with loose threads everywhere. I took it back to the store and they said there was nothing they could do and would not even offer me store credit for an exchange. I cannot spend that kind of money on another outfit and now my baby has nothing to wear to his baptism in 3 days. I will never shop at this store again and I dont recommend it to anyone else.

We brought our Daughter here after just receiving blood and a checkup on her feeding tube. She picked out a stuffed unicorn and was beyond excited. The Owner immediately said, "are you going to buy that? If not, you need to put that back." She was incredibly rude!

I was prepared to spend as they all need fall clothes but the women working in the shop continually hassled me about my drink. I am an adult very capable of handling my drink and would gladly replace anything should I spill it or happily help clean it. Completely unprofessional and rude, especially to someone trying to support your small business. Whether your child needs a christening gown or play clothes, we have what you need for all the special moments of growing up. Shop for dresses, father/daughter dances, birthday outfits, and shirts in sizes 7-16. I recently stopped in to get my toddler some Christmas PJs and a winter coat that was a little dressier.

Its unwavering commitment to quality sets Fancy Pants Charlotte apart from the ordinary. This brand blends east coast prep with west coast casual. They originated in Santa Monica, California, with retailers nationwide. This is also Fancy Pants’ best-selling boys’ brand.

My family spends a lot of money here and was about to spend much more. Shop for preschool clothes, playdate outfits, flower girls dresses, and PJs for toddlers. King Charles' New Photo Has Connection to George, Charlotte and Louis

They included two future British monarchs, George IV and William IV; as well as Charlotte, Princess Royal, who became Queen of Württemberg; and Prince Ernest Augustus, who became King of Hanover. George experienced severe stomach pain in 1788 that persisted for months and eventually led to weakness in his limbs and delirium. When George became uncharacteristically sexually aggressive, the decision was made to temporarily isolate him at Kew Palace. These symptoms recurred every few years until 1810, when the king finally became incapacitated and his eldest son—George, the Prince of Wales—became prince regent. Out of the public eye, the king conversed with dead people, including his daughter Amelia and what he believed were angels.

British Royal Family

"This matter has been settled for some time in alignment with Buckingham Palace." Though Archie was entitled to the "courtesy title" of Earl of Dumbarton upon his birth, he did not receive a royal title until King Charles was named monarch. When Charles became king upon Queen Elizabeth's death, Archie and his sister Lili were afforded the titles of prince and princess.

Youthforia criticized over new black foundation

While this is the first time an image of King Charles and Queen Camilla was credited to Pilkington, they aren't her first royal subjects. "To see the kids and to see that future of the monarchy is something they want to project, the line of succession," Fiorito says. "To give the country confidence that there are three generations of future kings there, (which) will be a very powerful message to send." King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla were joined by other members of the royal family during an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony once the Coronation Procession from Westminster Abbey to the palace concluded.

George, Charlotte, Louis: What role did King Charles III's grandchildren play in coronation?

Like her brother Archie, Lili received the title of princess once her grandfather became monarch. In March 2023, her title on the royal family's official website was updated from "Miss Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor" to Princess Lilibet of Sussex. Has the new Bridgerton spin-off series, Queen Charlotte, left you curious about the real-life Queen Charlotte (and her husband, King George III), and in particular how many children the pair shared together? Same – so we did a little digging into the archives to find out more about this royal couple, who were together for more than 50 years. He was a devoted and loving husband and a ruler known for his interest in and support for culture, science, astronomy, and agriculture.

King Charles and Queen Camilla are starring in a new portrait to mark the first anniversary of their coronation, and there's a sweet connection to his grandchildren. His grandfather also continued another royal tradition at the christening by pinning a pink flower to his suit for the occasion, just like he had previously done at the christening of his other two grandsons. To mark the big day, the royal family posed for a photo with baby Archie on Windsor Castle's famous green sofa — the same sofa that was used for Prince Harry's christening portrait in 1984.

Royals

Caroline and George remained married; however, in 1820, when the 57-year-old ascended to the throne as King George IV, he refused to recognize his wife Caroline as Queen, and excluded her from his coronation. "I would like him to have more time with the children," William said. "Having more time with him at home would be lovely, and being able to you know, play with the grandchildren. Because when he's there, he's brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible." King George III has been dubbed “the mad king” throughout history. There have been extensive studies of his medical history, but there hasn’t been a definitive answer about his illness.

Despite this, he was sent away to Hanover when he was just 12 years old. Even though two of his brothers were with him, this had to be hard. He studied at a university there, and at 16 joined the Hanoverian military.

How many children did the real Queen Charlotte and King George have?

Prince Edward is the fourth son of Queen Charlotte and King George. He married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (a widow and mother of two) in 1818. The couple had one child together, Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent. Princess Alexandrina was Queen Charlotte and King George's first legitimate, surviving grandchild, and went on to become Queen Victoria in 1837. Prince William Henry, the third son of Queen Charlotte and King George, had 10 illegitimate children with Irish actress Dorothea Bland starting in 1791.

Charlotte, Princess Royal

Charlotte’s ladies-in-waiting watched in horror as their queen stopped eating and slept only a few hours a night. She tore at her hair, which began to grey prematurely, and paced back and forth for hours on end, desperately wondering what would become of her. For the first time she locked her bedroom door against the king and kept her youngest children in her chambers at night, afraid for their safety after George physically assaulted his adult son, the Prince of Wales.

Charlotte was a patron of the arts and an amateur botanist who helped expand Kew Gardens. She introduced the Christmas tree to Britain, decorating one for a Christmas party for children of Windsor in 1800. She was distressed by her husband's bouts of physical and mental illness, which became permanent in later life. She maintained a close relationship with Queen Marie Antoinette of France, and the French Revolution is likely to have enhanced the emotional strain felt by Charlotte. Her eldest son, George, was appointed prince regent in 1811 due to the increasing severity of the King's illness. George III died a little over a year later, probably unaware of his wife's death.

Even by the Regency era, this would have been wildly unrealistic; while slavery was abolished in the British Empire in 1807, slaves weren’t fully free in the British colonies until 1838 and its repercussions are still felt to this day. Not only was Charlotte an unpolitical queen, but it has been suggested that she may also have been England’s first (and so far, only) queen of African heritage. Historian Mario De Valdes y Cocom claims that he can trace Charlotte’s genealogy back through nine generations to Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a 15th-century Portuguese noblewoman, whom he posits was black. He notes that Charlotte’s doctors occasionally used racially pejorative terms to describe her features, illustrating his claims with portraits in which her skin tone is notably darker than that usually seen in 18th-century portraiture. As George's wife, she was also Electress of Hanover until becoming Queen of Hanover on 12 October 1814. Charlotte was Britain's longest-serving queen consort, serving for 57 years and 70 days. Epic or not, the marriage of the real Charlotte and George was filled with high points that showcased their commitment to each other, as well as distressing times of illness—plenty for creator and writer Shonda Rhimes to draw from. Here’s a look inside the lives of one of Britain’s most famous ruling couples. Princess Sophia, the twelfth child of George and Charlotte, was born on November 3, 1777. During her life she was rumored to have an illegitimate child, possibly with her father's chief equerry, Major-General Thomas Garth.

When his father Prince Frederick died unexpectedly in 1751 at age 44, George became heir apparent. During his 60-year reign, several major world events occurred, including the Seven Years War, the American Revolutionary War, and the Battle of Waterloo. Throughout his life, he suffered from mental illness, often manifesting as acute mania—contemporary historians think he may have had bipolar disorder, but there's no way to confirm this diagnosis. After he became unable to rule beginning in 1810, his eldest son became Prince Regent in 1811. The happy status quo of the royal marriage was violently shaken in 1788, when George experienced his first bout of mental illness. Sleepless and often violent, he made lurid accusations of adultery against Charlotte and lascivious comments about her attendants.

Charlotte was born into the ruling family of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a duchy in northern Germany. In 1760, the young and unmarried George III inherited the British throne. As Charlotte was a minor German princess with no interest in politics, George considered her a suitable consort, and they married in 1761. The marriage lasted 57 years and produced 15 children, 13 of whom survived to adulthood.

He is one of the most active pastors that most of us have ever met. As a business owner in the construction industry, he was content with serving the Church in whatever capacity he could. Sensing a call to the more profound things of God, he pursued a degree in Biblical Theology, Counseling, and Teaching. He found himself answering a call into ministry in his early forties. These life experiences have allowed him to share the Word of God uniquely and practically. He is the son of our founding pastor, Ed Chidester.
